INDIANS, NEW YORK (Reuters) – Indians and New Yorkers alike were celebrating New Year’s Eve with dancing, boozy festivities and a new, new song from a New York-based hip-hop artist.
However, there was a twist: Indians and Americans were doing it in the middle of a major Indian festival, which was also happening on the eve of a new year.
New Year’s Day is celebrated in India by celebrating the birth of the new year, and is also known as Juhana or Jyoti.
But there was no jubilant celebration in New York on the first night of festivities, which included a new music video from Indian rapper D-Trick.
“I’m gonna show you a new dance, one I made up that I think is a lot better than the one you’re used to,” D-trick said in the video.
“It’s a lot different, it’s like a dance from a whole different world.”
D-tricky is a member of the Brooklyn-based rap group 2 Chainz, who is one of the most popular rappers in the world.
The rapper, who has released five albums, has recently released a new song called “New Year in India” with lyrics such as “I know that’s how I want it,” the Associated Press reported.
“If you know me, you know that I’m a big fan of dancing, and that’s the reason I’m trying to be the one that comes to your house,” he said.
But it’s not just New York, where Indians and non-Indians alike celebrated.
A number of Indian festivals have taken place in New England in the past two weeks, including festivals in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, the AP reported.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously made a push for India’s inclusion in the United Nations, which India joined last year.
But India is still far from fully integrated into the international community.
A new U.S. Senate bill to ensure full representation for the country’s Muslim community in Congress was defeated last month.
